The Finishing School

Celloglas finish Computer Arts issue with futuristic fluted foil, spot uv and velvet varnish!

The October issue (Issue #232) takes a look at the ‘Future of Design Education’ by exploring what the industry really needs from the next generation of designers.

The cover of this issue was finished by Celloglas at their Leicester site. The cover was finished with an overall coating of Velvet varnish, applied on our Heidelberg twin coater, that runs at 15,000 sheets an hour. The Velvet varnish gives the cover a lovely soft feel and has been used on previous Computer Arts covers. Once the varnish had been applied, the cover was then foiled using a special technique, creating a fluted effect on the main heading, as well as flat foil areas on the building, to highlight bright lights. The colour used was a diffuser foil. A spot UV was then applied to the main ‘Design Matters’ logo as well as on spots on the image to bring other small details out.

Steve Middleton, Sales Director at Celloglas, commented; “The fluted foil is a process we have here at Celloglas, and is a creative way to show extra dimension to printed media. The text literally looks as if it is popping out of the page!”

Nick Carson, editor of Computer Arts, added; “This cover really stands out from the crowd and definitely portrays that futuristic feel with the amazing diffuser foil. Each time we come to Celloglas to create something new and innovative, they are always up for the challenge, and this was no exception!”
