Celloglas submitted 3 pieces recently into the Print Week Awards, highlighting a range of creative finishes across a range of media. From magazine covers to an official programme for Wimbledon to a dramatic ad for Painkiller Hell Wars, an X Box game, all were vibrant and eye-catching.
Painkiller Hell Wars: Gory - This was an A4 promotional insert advertising a new XBOX game, and a piece we were very proud of as it enabled us to use our finishing to really get the story across.
The brief was to enhance the graphic by creating a ?bloody hand print? smeared on glass.
Processes used included registered U.V varnish and coloured ?high build? U.V varnish. A number of tinted U.V varnishes were tried and this combination was selected for being sufficiently transparent to allow the inks to show through whilst creating the desired effect. The high gloss finish of the U.V suggests the blood is still wet and the effect has been finished with a deep red, with high build varnish adding a third dimension and encouraging a morbid fascination and desire to feel the raised element. Just the job!
Wimbledon: Quick Serve ? This piece covered the daily match schedule for the The All England Lawn Tennis Club annual Wimbledon tournament, and featured silk OPP lamination and silver foil blocking.
Decoratively this is a straight forward film over lamination to give greater resilience to the cover with spot U.V varnish to enhance the finished program.
The key to this work is the service issue, the turnaround and the ?no fail? deadline for the job. The printed job is delivered to our site at 2am and must be laminated and varnished and ready to return for cutting and binding no later than 6am.
With gates open at 10am and the program on sale at that time there is no margin for delay or errors, and we're pleased to say that we, as ever, rose to the occasion.
The Edge: Arty Attitude ? A prestigious London based magazine, The Edge covers arts and music in the capital, and this piece was the favourite on the night of the Print Week Awards, and was highly commended by the judges. The design concept called for something that would stand out on the news stand, draw the eye to the magazine and portray something of the energy and vibrancy that the reader could expect.
The use of coloured foils as an effective alternative to inks is enhanced by the application of two colours prior to matt OPP lamination. This technique creates an interesting lustre which is balanced by the two bright foils laminated on the surface of the film ? this contrasted the reflective finish of the foil with the overall appearance of the cover. The piece stood out as making a strong impact, targeted at its key audience, it did it's job of hitting the reader between the eyes and that's what it's all about!
